Psalm 44:1-26

Chapter 44
For the director: for the sons of Korah. A maskil. 1 God, we have heard with our ears. Our fathers have told us about the work, the work you did in their days, in days of old. 2 With your hand you drove out nations and planted our fathers; you scattered peoples. 3 For they did not take possession of the land by their sword, nor did their arm save them, but by your right hand and your arm and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. 4 You are my King, O God; command deliverances for Jacob. 5 In you we gore our foes; in your name we trample our risers. 6 For I will not trust in my sword, and my shield will not save me. 7 For you have saved us from our adversaries and from those who hate us; you have put them to shame. 8 In God we boast all the day long, and in your name we will confess forever. Selah. 9 Yet you have rejected and disgraced us, and you do not go out with our armies. 10 You make us turn back from the face of the foe, and those who hate us plunder for themselves. 11 You have made us like sheep for food and have scattered us among the nations. 12 You have sold your people without price, and you have made no profit from their sale. 13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, scorn and derision to those around us. 14 You have made us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. 15 All day long my shame is before me, and the shame of my face covers me. 16 Because of the voice of the one who reproaches and insults, because of the face of the enemy and the avenger. 17 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you or been false to your covenant. 18 Our heart has not retreated backward, and you have turned our steps from your path. 19 For you have crushed us in a place of jackals and covered us with darkness. 20 If we have forgotten the name of our God and spread our hands to a foreign god— 21 Would not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 22 For on account of you we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep for slaughter. 23 Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not cast us off forever! 24 Why do you hide your face? Do you forget our affliction and our oppression? 25 For our soul has bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth. 26 Rise up, help us, and redeem us for the sake of your lovingkindness.
